What we Believe

At our core, we are a community centered on Jesus Christ—rooted in the Scriptures, shaped by the historic witness of the Church, and committed to walking in truth, love, and justice.

We joyfully affirm the faith passed down through the generations across continents, grounded in the Bible—the Old and New Testaments—as the inspired and trustworthy Word of God. We stand in agreement with the historic Christian faith expressed in the Nicene and Apostles’ Creeds, and we embrace the five great truths of the Protestant Reformation: Scripture alone, by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone.

We live this faith out as a diverse, Spirit-led body, loving God, loving our neighbor, and seeking the restoration of all things through the Gospel. We believe God’s Word still speaks today with clarity, offering both the healing grace of Christ and  the life-giving boundaries and freedoms of His will. —including His good design for marriage and sexuality as a reflection of His covenant love.

Below is a summary of our core beliefs:

THE BIBLE

The Bible is God’s Word—breathed out by the Spirit, without error in its original form, and fully sufficient for life, faith, and godly living. In its pages, we hear the voice of God, find the story of redemption, and receive guidance for how to live justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

GOD
We worship the one true and living God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is holy, loving, just, and worthy of our whole lives. Though His nature is a mystery, He reveals Himself clearly in Jesus and invites us into communion with Him and with one another (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19).

JESUS CHRIST
Jesus Christ is the Son of God, fully divine and fully human. He entered into our broken world, lived without sin, died on the cross to reconcile us to the Father, and rose with power to make all things new. He alone is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6; Acts 4:12).

THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit is God with us—our Comforter, Teacher, and Power. He draws us to Christ, transforms our hearts, empowers us to live holy and courageous lives, and equips the Church for witness in the world (John 16:13; Acts 1:8; Galatians 5:22-23).

HUMANITY
All people are made in the image of God—with dignity, purpose, and beauty. Yet through sin, we have turned away from God and one another. This brokenness shows up in personal sin and in the injustice of systems. But God, rich in mercy, offers redemption through Jesus Christ, who restores our humanity and reorders our desires for His glory (Genesis 1:27; Ephesians 2:1-10).

SALVATION & RESTORATION
Salvation is a gift of grace, not something we earn. It comes through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, and is received by faith through the work of the Holy Spirit. God is not only saving souls—He is redeeming the whole world, and one day He will make all things new. Until that day, we labor in hope, proclaiming His Kingdom come (Romans 8:18-30; Revelation 21:1-5).

OBEDIENCE & HOLINESS
We do not obey to be accepted—we obey because we are loved. True faith bears fruit. God’s commands lead to freedom, not restriction. We seek to live out the righteousness of Christ in our homes, our relationships, our work, and our public witness, including upholding the historic Christian vision of marriage as a covenant between one man and one woman (Ephesians 2:8-10; James 2:17; Matthew 19:4-6).

THE CHURCH
The Church is God’s family—called out, set apart, and sent into the world. We gather in worship, grow in discipleship, share life together, and extend mercy and justice in our neighborhoods and beyond. Every believer has a part to play, and every gift is needed. We are a multi-racial people, one body united by the blood of Christ, seeking to be a sign of God’s Kingdom in a divided world (Acts 2:42-47; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Micah 6:8).

At Koinonia, we believe clarity is a form of kindness, even if we reach different conclusions. We know that in a diverse, multi-generational, multi-ethnic church, people come from many theological backgrounds and lived experiences. So, we welcome your honest questions and count it a blessing to have an opportunity to communicate with you.

Shared Leadership in Christ: Affirming the Gifts of Women and Men
At Koinonia Church, we affirm that God calls and equips both women and men to serve, teach, and lead within the body of Christ. Rooted in Scripture and guided by prayerful discernment, we recognize the many ways God has used women throughout redemptive history—from prophets and teachers and evangelists—to advance the work of the Kingdom.

We believe spiritual gifts are not limited by gender but are graciously given by the Holy Spirit to all who are in Christ. As such, we joyfully affirm the ordination of biblically qualified women and men to every office of the church, including preaching, shepherding, and sacramental ministry.

Our position reflects a careful reading of Scripture, in which women speak God’s Word, lead communities, disciple others—including men—and bear faithful witness to the gospel. We affirm mutual submission and shared leadership as part of God's good design for the flourishing of the Church.

In honoring the gifts of all believers, we seek to model the equity, humility, and unity of the body of Christ for the glory of God and the good of our community.

A Biblical Vision for Sexuality and Relationships Koinonia affirms the Evangelical Presbyterian Church’s position that human sexuality is a gift from God, intended to be expressed within the covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. We seek to walk with grace, truth, and compassion as we uphold a biblical ethic of holiness, chastity, and love in all relationships.

We recognize and thank God that our congregation includes people of diverse backgrounds, including differing sexual orientations. At Koinonia, we are committed to walking together in love as we seek to follow the teachings of Scripture and create a community that honors the God-given dignity of every image bearer. We believe that every person is called—by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit—to offer their whole selves—mind, body, and soul—to the Lord, embracing both the boundaries and the blessings of God’s design for our sexuality.
